Combatting Burnout With CSR and Wellness
The trials, tribulations, and pitfalls of cramming unique-performing minds, into one status-quo-like melting pot.
‘Burnout Culture’ has become a steadily increasing topic of interest in recent years. We have consistently seen the gloves get hung up only mid way through people’s careers. The upper middle class is being traded in for the standard middle class, in bids to change way of life and serotonin levels.
It’s happening in more places than just insurance companies - Wall Street is seeing it too, and in the masses.
6 figure salaries are being turned down, as more and more begin to favour flexibility over finance. We think this has been a long time coming - which, granted, is easy to say when the majority of us at TARI Global have a very flexible scale when it comes to work/life balance.
The concern here isn’t the lack of manpower, as positions are being filled up faster than ever.
It boils down to the loss of existing talent. That employee’s career that has been heavily invested in over the course of 8 years of loyalty to the company. 8 years worth of invaluable experience, that will take the next employee another 8 years to gather.
This is not to say fresh blood is unwelcome to the pack - but leaders need experience.
Something that is rarely talked about, is the increase in work intensity. The last 30 years has seen competition rise up from just about everywhere. Gone are the days of the 80s where you could casually walk in to work, make a coffee, and read the newspaper at your desk while slowly warming into 10:30s first meeting.
Work has become war.
Countries across the world are taking note and beginning to see this. Japan being one of the most recent - with all nationals being given the option to opt into a four day work week.
Companies are also beginning to increase efforts into CSR and wellness - with work retreats growing in popularity, and designated wellness days becoming mandatory for all.
Sound baths, meditation, yoga, complimentary gym memberships, experiences & rewards; the list goes on - and CSR benefits can frequently mean the difference between pick of the litter & runners up when it comes to acquiring talent.
